The Illustrious Journey of Guruji Mangal Das

An Extraordinary Life of Compassion

Born as the eldest son to Narmada Bai and Kalyan Das Sapkota in 1896 (1953 B.S.) in the Illam Melbote district of East Nepal, Guruji Mangal Das rose from humble beginnings to leave an extraordinary imprint on religion, literature, and social reform. His spiritual quest brought him to Assam, where he embraced the teachings of Shri Krishna Pranami Dharma under Pitambar Das Maharaj. After completing an arduous foot pilgrimage (Padyatra) across the sacred landscapes of India, he entered deep meditation on the banks of the holy River Ganga in Haridwar, where he attained profound enlightenment and divine realization.

Translating Spirit into Action

Guided by the universal values of non-violence, compassion, and harmony propounded by Mahamti Prannath, Guruji practically translated the phrase “Service is religion” into tangible reality. He established a network of orphanages, old-age homes, hospitals, schools, and dispensaries across West Bengal (Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Siliguri), Sikkim, and Nepal. His physical journey concluded in 1985 at the age of 89. Today, his legacy lives on through the Mangal Dham memorial, and his memory has been officially honored by the Government of Nepal with a commemorative postage stamp.
